The Geared Gators want to go to Dallas!!!

Hi, my name is Kyle Route (yes, that’s me on the left holding the really cool trophy) and I am part of a VEX robotics team. (That’s right, we build a robot from the ground up, with no instructions to compete in tournaments around the state, no help from grown ups!!!)

Anyway, in January we decided to build a “bot” and named it Gator. It is a pretty cool robot. Our mentor decided to enter us in a competition in Boston on March 13th at the Wentworth Institute of Technology against 18 other teams. (What we didn’t know was that they were all HIGH SCHOOL!) Yes, we are 3 students from Samoset middle school, 6th Grade, and 2 students from Fallbrook Elementary, 5th Grade.

So, we arrived in Boston, and much to our surprise, we were pretty small. High school students are pretty big ya know! But we still competed! (Our parents kept telling us…”just have fun, aim low, do the best you can”, stuff like that.)

So, we did 6 rounds and ended up winning 5 of them…go figure! At the end of the competition, to our surprise, we came in 2nd Place!!! We couldn’t believe it! The best part was when the judge got up to announce the winner of the VEX Excellence Award (the highest honor awarded in VEX) and called the “Geared Gators” !!! We all kind of stood there looking at each other saying ( in our heads) “that’s us!!!!!”

Then they told us that we were officially invited to the World Championship Competition in Dallas, Texas!!!!! That’s right, against other teams from ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!

OK, so we were a little bit excited, and our parents had this really blank stare on their faces…like “what the heck just happened?” And we were all like…”We’re goin’ to Dallas baby!” And our parents still had that totally blank stare…we were a little bit worried about them.

Anyway, to make a very long story short….our parents knew that we didn’t have the money to go to Dallas……….but we didn’t. Bummer.

Which brings me to this letter….Please won’t you help us??!?!?!?!!? We need to raise $5,000 by April 22nd so we can go and kick those other countries butts! That’s a lot of cash! We are going around asking small local business owners to “Sponsor” us. If you agree to give us $200 we will put your name on a banner and the back of our t-shirts and will proudly display that you are our sponsor! Any donation is appreciated, but just wanted to let you know that the $200 will get you some free advertising.

For the Grown ups – Our team is a part of the Leominster Youth Robotics Association. A tax free “non-profit” 5013c organization that sponsors young, gifted, talented little creators that enjoy the pursuit of discovery and science. (We will all probably be engineers some day.) This group and teams are solely funded by private donations, is not affiliated with any school and is strictly run by volunteers and mentors of those who love to create and build, future engineers of the world.

We desperately want to go to Dallas, Texas and compete against other students (who are much older than us) and show them all what Leominster’s Youth is made of. (Not to mention make some really cool friends from around the world!)

PLEASE, won’t you consider donating/sponsoring us today?

Please make checks out to:

LINK TO BROCHURE

Who Qualifies for the Extended Credit?

• First-time home buyers who purchase homes between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010. To qualify as a “first-time home buyer” the purchaser or his/her spouse may not have owned a residence during the three years prior to the purchase.
• Current home owners purchasing a home between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010, who have used the home being sold or vacated as a principal residence for five consecutive years within the last eight.

Which Properties Are Eligible?

• The Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit may be applied to primary residences, including: single-family homes, condos, townhomes, and co-ops.

How Much Credit is Available?
• The maximum allowable credit for first-time home buyers is $8,000.
• The maximum credit allowed for current homeowners is $6,500.

How is a Buyer’s Credit Amount Determined?
Each home buyer’s tax credit is determined by several factors:
Buyer Income
• Single buyers with incomes up to $125,000 and married couples with incomes up to $225,000—may receive the maximum tax credit.
Price of the Home
• Under the Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit, credit may only be awarded on homes purchased for $800,000 or less.

If the Buyer(s)’ Income Exceeds These Limits,Can He/She Still Get a Credit?
• Yes, some buyers may still be eligible for the credit.
• The credit decreases for buyers who earn between $125,000 and $145,000 for single buyers and between $225,000 and $245,000 for home buyers filing jointly. The amount of the tax credit decreases as his/her income approaches the maximum limit. Home buyers earning more than the maximum qualifying income—over $145,000 for singles and over $245,000 for couples are not eligible for the credit.

Can a Buyer Still Qualify If He/She Closes After April 30, 2010?
• Under the Extended Home Buyer Tax Credit, as long as a written binding contract to purchase is in effect on April 30, 2010, the purchaser will have until July 1, 2010 to close.

Will the Tax Credit Need to Be Repaid?

• No. The buyer does not need to repay the tax credit, if he/she occupies the home for three years or more. However, if the property is sold during this three-year period, the full amount credit will be recouped on the sale.

New State Smoke Detector Requirements

3/8/2010

A new regulation regarding the installation and maintenance of smoke detectors goes into effect April 5, 2010.

These new regulations were enacted by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and will apply to single and multi-family homes built or most recently substantially altered prior to Jan. 1, 1975 and sold on or after April 5, 2010.  Homes built or substantially altered on or after Jan. 1, 1975 are governed by the State Building Code, which already imposes the same requirements & restrictions.

The regulations currently require two different types of smoke detectors to be in place depending upon the location in the home. In zones within 20 feet of a kitchen or bathroom, smoke detectors using photo-electric only technology will be required. Outside of the 20-foot kitchen and bath zone(s), both ionization and photoelectric technology must be installed. The battery/hard-wire rules are not changing at the state level.

These requirements were developed, in part, based upon research that shows that ionization smoke detectors tend to give false alarms due to fumes given off from typical cooking or steam from a shower. Frequent false alarms often lead residents to disable smoke detectors by removing their batteries.

527 CMR 32.00: Approved Smoke Detectors
32.01: Purpose and Scope
32.02: General Requirements
32.03   Installation of smoke detectors in the vicinity of a kitchen, bathroom or other areas

32.01: Purpose and Scope
Pursuant to the Board’s authority under M.G.L. c. 22D, s. 4 to develop a comprehensive fire safety code and under the general regulatory authority of M.G.L. c. 148, sections 10 and 28, the purpose of 527 CMR 32.00 is to enhance public safety by providing further technical qualification to the definitions of  “Approved monitored battery power smoke detector” and “Approved primary power smoke detector”, as those words are used in M.G.L. c. 148, sections 26D, E and F.

This regulation shall be effective as of April 5, 2010, and shall be the applicable standard for sellers to comply with the provisions of M.G.L. c. 148, s. 26F upon sale and transfer of certain buildings or structures occupied in whole or in part for residential purposes.

31.02  General Requirements
(1)  Except for smoke detectors located in the vicinity of areas regulated by 527 CMR 32.03, an approved monitored battery power smoke detector, shall consist of a working device, as defined in M.GL.c148, s. 26D, that employs both ionization and photoelectric technology, in either a single unit or by means of two separate units.
(2)  Except for smoke detectors located in areas regulated by 527 CMR 32.03, an approved primary power smoke detector, shall consist of a working device, as defined in M.GL.c148, s. 26D, that employs both ionization and photoelectric technology, in either a single unit or by means of two separate units.

32.03      Installation of Smoke Detectors In the Vicinity of a Kitchen, Bathroom or Other Areas
No smoke detector employing ionization technology shall be installed within 20 feet of an entryway to a kitchen, or bathroom containing a bathtub or shower.  The 20-foot measurement shall include and extend into common areas of a multi-family dwelling, if applicable.

March 2, 2010:

Synergy Electric Inc., formally PlasticCity Electric is proud to announce it’s new website and business model.

With the current economic conditions stifling or even crippling some small businesses, Mike Marini and Keith Boisvert made a conscious decision to not be defeated.

While some business owners admitted defeat, these two decided it was time to evaluate the new economic climate and completely revamp their business to compete and move forward.

Understanding the need to specialize, Synergy Electric Inc. was formed to focus in on specific areas of electrical service. On the residential side they are now catering to the custom market, handling generators, remodels, custom lighting, surge suppression, home office and special needs applications.

The staff at Synergy feel that by being able to offer superior quality and professional 24 hour service at affordable rates they can be competitive in this market while offering their clients complete piece of mind in knowing that their work is being done by insured experts.

Synergy Electric Inc, has also partnered with other area professional contractors to ensure that they can handle all aspects of your project. Understanding that most projects require the need for multiple trades to complete, Synergy’s full service programs takes the hassle and aggravation out of that big project…they can handle it from start to finish.

On the industrial side of the business, Synergy has broken out its specialty and made that its primary focus. With over 40 years of combined industrial knowledge, Synergy can handle everything from building custom control panels to machinery troubleshooting and repair.
