Curves Health Tip

Exercise at least 30 minutes a day – Regular exercise, including your Curves workouts and daily brisk walks, can lower your blood pressure (BP) dramatically.
Increase your potassium intake - Potassium speeds the body’s sodium excretion. Reach for bananas, baked potatoes, tomato paste, lima beans, sweet potatoes, yogurt, and cantaloupe.
Eat more low-fat dairy – Not only does it reduce high BP, but it may also prevent it. Harvard researchers studied 29,000 middle-aged women and found that those who consumed two to 10 servings a day were 11% less likely to develop hypertension.
Enjoy a piece of dark chocolate - Flavonoids, the beneficial antioxidants found in high-cacao dark chocolate (look for at least 60% cacao), work to lower the risk of heart disease and prevent cholesterol from clinging to artery walls. But moderation is key: limit yourself to 1-ounce square a day.

The Importance of Pet Dental Health
February 2, 2011 by admin
PSI encourages all pet owners to take a look inside their pet’s mouth.
The American Dental Association estimates that almost 80 percent of adults brush their teeth at least twice a day. Keeping our teeth clean is vital to our oral health and well being, and it shouldn’t be any different for our pets.
When is the last time you brushed Fido’s teeth or had them professionally cleaned? Pets need dental care, just as people do. Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, urges pet owners not to neglect their pet’s pearly whites.
According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three. Dr. Brooke Niemiec, doctor of veterinary medicine, recommends an annual dental exam for all pets, but believes a bi-annual exam is needed for small and toy breeds.
“The main reason that pets need a dental exam is because pets do not show their oral infection or pain, yet a vast majority of pets have a problem in their mouth,” said Niemiec. “These problems cause not only local issues, but systemic disease as well.”
Niemiec treats the same problems over and over again in the animals he cares for. Periodontal disease is the most common problem for both dogs and cats. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection resulting from the build-up of plaque on the surfaces of the teeth surrounding the gums. If plaque is allowed to accumulate, it will irritate the gum tissue. This will eventually lead to infection in the bone surrounding the teeth.
He also sees regular cases of broken teeth, oral cancer, jaw fractures, orthodontic disease and tooth resorption in cats, which is the loss of tooth enamel that eventually leads to the loss of the tooth structure.
Dr. Tony Woodward, doctor of veterinary medicine, also sees similar issues in his patients. He cautions that even though there are not any specific warning signs to watch for, pets tend to act older.
“Besides the few obvious problems, like broken teeth or extremely bad breath, animals don’t really show symptoms from their dental problems,” explained Woodward. “Pets do become hesitant to eat and seem to think about eating before diving right in when suffering from periodontal disease or other dental issues.”
Both dentists stress the importance of preventative at-home care to help combat dental disease in pets and feel it is a critical part of dental care. Plaque forms on teeth within 24 hours and studies have shown areas can become re-infected with two weeks of a cleaning.
Woodward suggests four steps to help ward off gum disease and bad breath. The most important aspect of at-home care is to brush your pet’s teeth once or twice a day between one-two minutes. In addition, Woodward also advises pet owners to utilize oral rinses, as well as pet food and treats designed specifically to improve and promote oral health.
The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) has compiled a list of products that are intended to help reduce the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth of animals and created the VOHC seal of approval.
Niemiec suggests at-home dental care can be successful if started young, done consistently and made into a positive experience for the pet.

IS 2011 THE YEAR OF RECOVERY?

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage
JANUARY 2011
As we kick-off the new year and make resolutions to keep our resolutions, one question is still at the forefront of many minds. Will the housing market and the economy overall improve in 2011? Depending on what you’re reading or who you’re watching, the opinions of economists and real estate industry watchers are varied. It’s not easy to predict what the market will do in the coming year, especially without the help of a crystal ball. However there are some key indicators to follow.
Most agree that the housing market recovery is largely based on the recovery of the job market. Consumers will make a down payment and purchase a home when they feel financially stable and secure.
According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report released in December, 28 states and the District of Columbia posted unemployment rate decreases from a year earlier though the national jobless rate approached 9.8 percent in November.
In December, the Labor Department issued statistics that showed applications for jobless insurance payments fell by 3,000 sending the average in December to the lowest level since August 2008, and fewer workers filed claims for unemployment possibly signaling that the U.S. job market is improving if only slightly.
Another indicator to watch is pending home sale statistics. According to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), pending home sales jumped in October, showing a positive uptrend since bottoming in June. The NAR Pending Home Sales Index rose 10.4 percent to 89.3 based on contracts signed in October from 80.9 in September. Of course the index remains 20.5 percent below when compared to the same time last year as buyers rushed to meet the Tax Credit deadline in 2009.
Overall, these numbers are positive, but we still have some way to go before a full recovery is realized. “It is welcoming to see a solid double-digit percentage gain, but activity needs to improve further to reach healthy, sustainable levels,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist. “The housing market clearly is in a recovery phase and will be uneven at times, but the improving job market and consequential boost to household formation will help the recovery process going into 2011,” he said.
If you are in the process of buying or selling a home, it’s important to discuss these factors with your Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage sales professional. They will know how local unemployment rates and pending sales in your immediate area will impact your success. They can also review with you the included graph to determine how additional factors such as inventory levels and recent sales can affect your home purchase and home sale goals.
At Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, we are hopeful that 2011 will bring a revived economy and a stable housing market. We look forward to welcoming in the new year and assisting you with all your real estate needs in 2011 and beyond.

SELLING A HOME DOESN’T HAVE TO BE CHILLY
December 16, 2010 by admin
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage
DECEMBER 2010
As we hunker down and prepare ourselves for the wintry chill ahead, many home sellers consider taking their home off the market. However, there can be some real benefit for those home sellers who brave the cold and keep their homes on the market during the winter months.
Though it is true that spring and early summer are the heavy selling seasons, not many realize that selling in winter can be just as profitable, and it may even be a better time to feature your property.
During the winter months there tends to be less homes on the market which means less competition. Less competition gives home sellers more opportunity to showcase their property and make their home stand-out from the rest.
Selling during the winter season will also let home sellers take advantage of the holiday decorations which help to make homes look more cozy and inviting. The lack of leaves on trees can let the light in, and also highlight a wonderful view that would normally be shrouded in spring and summer.
Here are several tips to help you market your home successfully during the winter months.
Clear debris from your gutters to keep ice and snow at bay. Remove fallen leaves and other foliage before the first snow fall. If it does snow, make certain that all entrances to the home and driveway are easily accessible and clear of any ice. Be sure to wash the windows to take advantage of any spectacular views, and light a fire during an open house if you have a fireplace.
Of course, work with your sales professional to ensure that your property is properly priced for the market. Don’t forget that while there may be fewer buyers in the market during the winter, there are still buyers out there who are looking for a deal and their perfect home.
If you would like more information about how to successfully market your property during the winter season, please contact your Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage sales professional. Your real estate professional will analyze a graph similar to the one attached to review comparables in your market, inventory that could impact your success, and prices in the area.

Spotlight on Business: All Points Limousine
November 24, 2010 by admin
All Points Limousine
You might say that Becky Laramee took the scenic route to becoming owner of All Points Limousine.
With a career ranging from selling for Coca-Cola to being an elementary school teacher, Becky has gained experience across several industries. When she and her brother John purchased the company in 2008, they probably didn’t expect to be featured in the trade magazine LCT (Limousine, Charter, & Tour) just two years later.
But that’s exactly what happened, thanks to plenty of energy, great networking, and an eye toward success. LCT selected All Points Limousine as one of five young transportation companies in the United States to be showcased in the Great American Limo Race. The magazine is following each of the companies for 18 months, covering challenges and opportunities involved with new business ownership. The winner will be the company with the largest growth percentage in that timeframe. You can track Becky’s participation in the Great American Limo Race by following her blog entries at http://blogs.lctmag.com/limorace/category/243.aspx.
What’s the best part about being in the Great American Limo Race? Becky says, “I am not just competing with these four transportation businesses from across the country but I am learning from them. Their challenges become my successes.”
While most of their business comes from airport transportation, All Points Limousine has also been busy with weddings in the past few months. They celebrated their two-year anniversary in July, commemorating the event with the purchase of two new vehicles. In addition, the company recently hired a Spanish-speaking chauffeur, which is helping them better serve the Latino community—particularly for Quinceañera celebrations.
As with most businesses, All Points Limousine would like to continue growing and boost sales. They are taking several steps to achieve their objectives, mostly in the area of marketing and communications. One of the company’s goals is for customers to perceive All Points Limousine as a friendly business with a “welcome to the family” feel—something they believe sets them apart from the competition: “We are a family run business,” Becky says, “and we get excited to welcome a new client into our traveling family. We want each and every client to feel like they are our only client.”
Becky is involved with the North Central Chamber of Commerce and Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce, where she is on the board of several committees. She is also the Treasurer of the Leominster Small Business Association.
With all that drive—no pun intended—it’s no surprise that All Points Limousine is poised for continued success.
All Points Limousine is located at 463 Lancaster Street in Leominster. Feel free to visit them at www.allpointslimoservice.com or call at 1-800-675-4122.

Homeownership is Still the American Dream
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage
NOVEMBER 2010
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) recently released its annual Housing Opportunity Pulse Survey which questioned Americans from across the nation on their attitudes towards homeownership. According to the survey, homeownership still features prominently as the American dream as nearly 8 out of 10 respondents believe buying a home is a good financial decision.
Also according to NAR and its Pending Home Sales Index, pending home sales have increased for the second consecutive month rising 4.3 percent to 82.3 based on contracts signed in August. The data reflects contracts and not closings. A sale is listed as pending when the contract has been signed but the transaction has not closed, though the sale usually is finalized within one or two months of signing.
That number is still low when compared to August of 2009 when it was up 103.0, but it is still a sign of improvement and we’ll take it. It’s clear that we still have a ways to go towards a full housing market recovery. Most industry experts agree that we must have further job creation and healthier consumer confidence to achieve that goal. Those surveyed also agreed that job insecurity and the lack of jobs continue to be the primary obstacle to home ownership and market recovery at this time.
For those in a position to buy, it is still a prime opportunity with historically low interest rates and a wide selection of homes that are more affordable now than ever. NAR’s survey respondents agreed, with more than two-thirds of respondents (68 percent) saying that now is a good time to buy a home.
If you are currently in the market to purchase a home, be aware that industry insiders are watching inflation rates closely right now. If inflation rates begin to rise, then so will mortgage rates. If mortgage rates rise, it could price many buyers out of their dream home.
To see what specific trends are taking place in your market area, view the graph and feel free to contact a Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage sales professional who can provide you with a detailed analysis
